AK-47 Rifle Recovered from Doctor’s Locker at Govt. Medical College Anantnag, Jammu & Kashmir

Recovery of an AK-47 rifle from the locker of the former senior resident doctor at the Government Medical College, Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir, has sent shock waves across the valley and the nation.  The seizure of the weapon was done by the Srinagar Police with the assistance of the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC), Anantnag.  The individual who had the locker in possession is identified as senior resident doctor Adeel Ahmad Rather, son of Abdul Majeed Rather.  Dr. Adeel, is a resident of Qazigund in Anantnag district who until October 24, 2024, served as a senior resident doctor at Department of Medicine, GMC Anantnag.

Sources say that Dr. Adeel was recently transferred to Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, over his alleged role in certain unlawful activities.  The cause that led to seizure of the weapon from government hospital’s locker at a point of time when the accused doctor is said to have joined duties at Saharanpur is not known yet.

Authorities of the Police department conveyed to the press that a case has been registered against Dr. Adeel after recovery of the weapon.  An FIR under sections 7/25 of the Arms Act and sections 13, 28, 38, and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act has been registered against the accused.  Dr. Adeel Ahmad Rather, has been taken into custody by Srinagar Police.

Police officials told that, Dr. Adeel and the seized weapon is in custody of the Srinagar Police and further investigation particularly to establish the motive of possessing the gun is being carried out jointly by the Srinagar Police and the Joint Interrogation Centre.  Also the circumstances under which Dr. Adeel has taken such an unlawful step is also being investigated.  The investigating team is trying to find out the source from where the detained doctor acquired this deadly weapon.

Officials have confirmed that Dr. Adeel is under detention for further investigation and that all necessary legal procedures are being followed.
