Arwind Kejriwal to announce new CM for Delhi, will submit his resignation at 4:30 today to the Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. At 11:30 a meeting of MLAs of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will be convened to discuss and finalize the name of the new Chief Minister for Delhi. The Delhi Assembly’s term ends on February 23, 2025, accordingly the polls are expected to be held sometime in early February. Addressing party workers on Sunday, Kejriwal demanded that Delhi Assembly polls be conducted along with Maharashtra. He said he will take up the responsibility for the third time only after the public issues and “Certificate of Honesty” through a clear mandate.
Potential Candidates in the race for new CM of Delhi
On 16th, at the official resident of Arvind Kejriwal, AAP’s top decision-making body – ‘Political Affairs Committee’ was called to seek their opinion regarding potential candidate as the next Chief Minister to succeed Arvind Kejriwal. Former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha member Raghav Chadha were present in the meeting with Arvind Kejriwal. Names of potential candidate for the next Chief Minister of Delhi were: Delhi ministers Atishi, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, and Saurabh Bharadwaj. Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, Deputy Speaker in the assembly Rakhi Birla, who is also the MLA from Mangolpuri constituency, and Kondli legislator Kuldeep Kumar’s name were also in the list as potential candidates for the post of Chief Minister.

On Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation, the ANI report quoted Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj stating that, “One of us (AAP leaders) will sit on the chair until the elections take place, and it will be ‘similar to the way Bharat ruled, in the absence of Lord Ram’”. Saurabh Bharadwaj, further said, “… It does not matter who sits on the CM chair because the mandate was for Arvind Kejriwal. The public chose Arvind Kejriwal. He has said that he will not sit on the CM chair until the people ask again but the chair belongs to Arvind Kejriwal for these and the next 5 years… One of us will sit on the chair until the elections take place. It will be similar to the way Bharat ruled in the absence of Lord Ram… There will be a discussion with the MLAs today and the name may be decided in it.”

Priyanka Kakkar, National Spokesperson of AAP said, “The Name can be of anyone (for the post of Delhi CM)…It is a matter of happiness that Delhi will get a new Chief Minister. But at the same time, we are sad that due to the conspiracies of the BJP, Arvind Kejriwal has to give ‘Agni-Pariksha’. We all will ensure that Arvind Kejriwal returns to the Chief Minister’s post as soon as possible so that the people of Delhi can continue to get whatever facilities they have been getting.”
