Atishi will be the new Chief Minister of Delhi, unanimously resolved at the recently concluded meeting held at the official residence of Arvind Kejriwal. As an ‘Agni Pariksha’ against conspiracies Arvind Kejriwal resigned from the post of Chief Minister and has demanded an early elections for Delhi alongwith Maharashtra Assembly elections.
MLA from the Kalkaji constituency of Delhi Atishi, aged 43 years, is also a member of the ‘Political Affairs Committee’ of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). ‘Political Affairs Committee’ is AAP’s top decision-making body. Presently, she is also serving as Minister of Education, the Public Works Department (PWD), Culture & Tourism in Delhi the government. She was also appointed as advisor to the former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia. She came more into limelight and After Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). She took up many important responsibilities of party. Her name for the post of Chief Minister is reportedly proposed Arvind Kejriwal.
Atishi’s Personal Life
Born in Delhi, on 8 June 1981, in a Rajput family having Punjabi background. Her father was a University Professor Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi. She was given the middle name Marlena by her parents.
Atishi attended Springdale School, Pusa road, New Delhi. After completing graduation in history from the Saint Stephen’s College Delhi in 2001, she joined Oxford University and in 2003 she completed her Master’s degree in history on a ‘Chevening Scholarship’. In 2005, she went to Magdalen College, Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Before entering into active politics she served as a teacher in History and English at the Rishi Valley School in Andhra Pradesh.
Her middle name ‘Marlena’, given by her parents is told be a mix of the two words – ‘Marx’ and ‘Lenin’. During elections in 2018, she dropped ‘Marlena’ and continued using her first name ‘Atishi’.
Atishi’s married life
Before coming into active politics Atishi, met Pravin Singh, who studied at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad. After working together for few years on some social project they came close and tied knots. Pravin Singh, is a strong advocate of Gram Swaraj system and mostly spends his time in rural areas. He is more interested in the upliftment of the poor and needy people from rural areas. They jointly worked in rural areas to improve quality of education and they also carried out projects on organic farming.
Atishi & Controversies
A defamation case filed by the Delhi BJP’s Vice President Rajiv Babbar, resulted in the court summoning Atishi Marlena and three of her party leaders. After a statement issued to the press that the BJP had removed 30 lacs names from Delhi’s voter list, BJP called it as an attack on their reputation and Rajiv Babbar filed this case. The court found the allegation to be prima facie defamatory registered the case section 500 of the Indian penal Code (IPC). In 2024, another defamation case came to be filed by BJP leader Praveen Shankar Kapoor against Atishi Marlena and Kejriwal over the allegations of poaching.
Political career of Atishi
In January 2013, she got involved in policy formulation for the AAP. In 2015, she was closely associated and actively supported the ‘Jal Satyagraha’ in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. The movement was actually started by an activist and leader Alok Agarwal. In 2019, Atishi, was appointed the Lok Sabha election In-charge for Delhi, Lok Sabha elections. She also contested from the east Delhi Lok Sabha constituency as AAP candidate but lost to Gautam Gambhir by a margin of 4.77 lakh votes. She secured third position. After the elections held in 2020, she also worked as In-charge for AAP’s Goa unit.
In 2020, she won the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections from Kalkaji constancy of South Delhi. She defeated Bhartiya Janata Party candidate Dharmveer Singh by 11,422 votes. She was inducted into the Delhi government as a cabinet minister along with Saurabh Bhardwaj after the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and health minister Satyendra Jain.
