Srinagar, Sept 30: Nalin Prabhat, a highly decorated IPS officer, officially assumed the role of Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday, succeeding R. R. Swain, who recently retired on Monday.
The official announcement was made by the Ministry of Home Affairs in the month of August. On Monday R.R. Swain, attained superannuation. Swain bid farewell to his service tenure by visiting Pratap Park, Srinagar, where he paid tribute of the martyrs. Later on a farewell program was held at Bemina Police Public School, Srinagar.
The Ministry of Home Affairs had announced Prabhat’s appointment in August, and in a simple ceremony at the police headquarters, he received the baton from Swain. Prabhat, a 1992-batch IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, stated that he would formally assume command at midnight.
Born on 14th March, 1968, in Thungri village in Manali, in the state of Himachal Pradesh, Nalin Prabhat completed post graduate degree in Arts from the St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He is highly experienced and is been awarded several prestigious awards during his career which commenced on 9th January 1993. Winner of Three Police Gallantry Medals, ‘Antrik Suraksha Padak’ and the ‘Parakram Padak’ Nalin is an exceptionally brave and committed officer.
Known for his expertise in counter-insurgency operations, Prabhat previously led the Greyhounds, an elite anti-Naxal unit in Andhra Pradesh, and has held key positions within the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), such as Inspector General of Operations and Additional Director General in Kashmir.
Before this appointment, Prabhat served as Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG), a tenure cut short to facilitate his transfer to the Union Territories cadre (AGMUT) for an initial three-year term.
With deep knowledge of Jammu and Kashmir’s complex security landscape, particularly in counter-terrorism operations, experts believe Prabhat’s leadership will be instrumental in addressing the region’s ongoing security challenges.
His decorated career, marked by exceptional bravery and dedication, signals a strategic and robust approach to maintaining peace and stability in the Union territory during these politically sensitive times.
