Srinagar, Oct 1: J&K Awami National Conference Senior Vice President Muzaffar Shah has expressed unwavering support for Ladakhi environmental activist and prominent social figure, Sonam Wangchuk, following his recent detention by Delhi police during a journey on foot to the capital.

Due to growing ecological threats, increasing attempts of incursions on border by the Chinese troops almost the entire Ladakh is been protesting since long. The people of Ladakh have been demanding autonomous administration for Ladakh.  Recently Sonam Wangchuk started a peaceful ‘Pad Yatra’ to Delhi.  On the way to Bapu’s Samadhi he’s detained at Delhi Border.  Yesterday in a message shared on ‘X’, Wangchuk conveyed, “I AM BEING DETAINED…alongwith 150 padyatris at Delhi Border, by a police force of 100s some say 1,000.  Many elderly men and women in their 80s and few dozen Army veterans…. Our fate is unknown.  We were on a most peaceful march to Bapu’s Samadhi… in the largest democracy in the world, the mother of democracy… Hai Ram!”

Muzaffar Shah said, “The demands of the people of Ladakh are no different than the demands of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Shah stated, highlighting the shared aspirations for rights and representation across the divisions of the erstwhile state of J&K.

Reflecting on the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, Shah underscored the profound sense of loss felt by the people of both Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

“Since that pivotal moment, the sentiment to reclaim our rights has only intensified,” he added. He firmly backed the demands from Ladakh for constitutional guarantees similar to those enshrined in Article 370 and 35A.

Shah criticized the Union Government for their approach to peaceful protests, asserting, “Instead of arresting those who seek justice, the government should have demonstrated that the emotional and geographical distance between ‘Dil and Dilli’ is not a relic of the past.”

He lamented the failure to allow Wangchuk and his associates to pay their respects at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi, stating, “This reflects a troubling disregard for the voices of our people.”

Expressing his dismay at Wangchuk’s treatment, Shah remarked, “It is a blemish on our democracy that an acclaimed environmentalist and ardent son of the soil should face such humiliation.”

“Awami National Conference and the people of Jammu and Kashmir stand in full solidarity with the demands of the people of Ladakh, Leh, and Kargil as they are an inseparable part of J&K. We will not be silenced,” he concluded with a powerful message of unity.
